In 1988 ….(or was it ’89 ?), I turned down Ralph Lauren when he offered me the job as chief pilot on his yet-to-be-delivered Gulfstream II……Ralph was a charter customer and we were standing on the ramp in Montrose, Colorado after de-planing from a GII that was owned by (and I was captain for) an absolute gentleman by the name of Dr Ralph Landau.
……So, call me stupid, but I had other things in mind, and flying the (then) triangle between New York, Montrose and Montego Bay wasn’t on the agenda………fast forward to 2012 and I’ve just returned from Western China after negotiating to acquire a G450 for an ambitious Chinese company that intends to knock Deer Jet (aka Beijing Capital Airlines) off its pedestal……..tempus fugit.
Let me back up a little…cut to NBAA ….October 2011.
